Lowlife 01:13
Oh! The lowlife's a mighty high life, where the food is always free. And the only thing I pay for is beer and misery. I know I gotta go cause it's running down to three, and the only thing I need is a reason why to be. If it wasn't for dying, I'd probably be dead. Eventually I'll figure out how to live on beer and bread. and eventually I'll learn to deal with scorn and misery, by knowing where to go and where I'm supposed to be. Oh! The lowlife's a mighty high life being gainfully unemployed. May not have any money, but I'll die a happy boy. If I had a hundred dollars I'd be living like a queen, with pockets full of cigarettes and swimming in caffeine. But I only got two dollars, and I'm happy all the same. Just standing on this on-ramp and hoping it don't rain. I got nothing left to lose, and nothing left to gain, and if I don't die happy, I got no one else to blame.

After sittin' round all day I thought I could hear myself breaking, Boom, boom boom. It'll be okay, just for today, hope so anyway. Breaking, boom, boom, boom. Last night had me wake up, looking down at my feet trying to move, stomping on the ground. Cracked surface wearing down, kinda thin. Maybe when it breaks I'll wake up again. After sittin' round all day I thought I could hear myself breaking. Boom, boom, boom.

Uphill 02:01
Cover my head, so bugs can't fly in my mouth while I'm sleeping. Sleeping bag feels like lead, do you have any cardboard? Watch that home-bum shit over there. Do you have any cardboard? Uphill both ways, five miles from here. Uphill both ways, soaking wet, five miles from here. Come to appreciate dry pants and the kindness of strangers. Drinking cranberry Emergen-C in smuggled American gin. Wigs for entertainment, mud and bugs, and mud and blood and bugs and... Uphill both ways, five miles from here. Uphill both ways, soaking wet, five miles from here.

about

Free history lesson with these rare tracks from the "County Z / Shep and Me" split cassette, originally released in 2003 on Snobhaus Tapes, now finally remastered and made officially available online for the first time.

This was originally one half of the split cassette single with everyone's favorite Minneapolis art-punk dirtballs COUNTY Z, who were fellow friends and co-conspirators. It was a "cassingle" at only five minutes per side, but Shep and Me manages to pack in three short songs and a weird siren-laden reprise in that amount of time, most of which is sourced from recordings of live "full band" performances from the period. Scumbag pride anthems about being broke but happy, and true tales of tough travel.

This is the first appearance of the tracks "Lowlife" and "Sittin' Round", both of which were later re-recorded and appear in slightly different versions on the full length "Cloudy Chowder" album from 2007.

This is the first and only official appearance of the track "Uphill" to date, which was a live set staple and saw several variations throughout that time.
